Four dates will present Parts I though IV:

PicoScope Training I:  Saturday, September 29, 2018 at College of DuPage

PicoScope Training II:  Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Triton College

PicoScope Training III:  Saturday, January 26, 2019

PicoScope Training IV:  Saturday, February 23, 2019eptember 29, October 20, January 26 and February 23

ASA Illinois is proud to have the charismatic, hands-on instructor Ken Zanders leading this four-part training series, beginning on September 29, 2018. Ken will guide you through an extensive, 32-hour detailed approach to the PicoScope with formal mentoring between classes and goal setting techniques for driveability diagnosis. The overall goal of this program is that each student becomes a confident “power user” of the Pico equipment and its accessories. This program will provide detailed information on the PicoScope tool and proper use and care.

These sessions will be truly HANDS-ON, with all participants performing significant hands-on activity. Ken will include a “Show Me” element for all tasks, i.e., Ken will ensure everyone is hands-on and can demonstrate they can put into practice what they’ve learned.

Assignments will be provided for you to complete after you return to your shop. Ken will provide formal mentoring between classes, as needed, to ensure each level of competency before you move to the next level and course.

PicoScope Training I:  Saturday, September 29, 2018 at College of DuPage

The first course of this 4-part training series will provide an introduction to PicoScopes from a detailed approach to get the student started with goal setting techniques for driveability diagnosis. This training will provide a pictorial view as to whether or not electrical components are working properly. The student will leave with a very good understanding of “where do I start” techniques. The session will include a Basic Detailed Approach:

  • Waveform Library: The Waveform Library Browser, The Automotive Waveform Exchange
  • Automotive Menu: Guided Tests (Oxygen Sensors, Cam and Crank Sensors, CAN High and Low Signals)
  • Pico Diagnostics: Pico Diagnostics (Software) - Battery Testing, Compression Testing, Cylinder Balance
  • Basic Engine Mechanical: Relative Compression Testing (Pico Scope) - Proper Synch Probe Usage (Channel A), High Amperage Current Probe (Channel B), Cranking Voltage (Channel C)
  • Advanced Engine Mechanical: In-Cylinder Analysis

PicoScope Training II:  Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Triton College (Requires Completion of Pico Scope Training I)

The second course in the 4-part training series will apply an intermediate approach. The training in this course will center around intermediate techniques in engine mechanical analysis. This training will provide a pictorial view into engine integrity. There will be certificates issued from Pico Technology after completion of this course. The session will include an Intermediate Step Forward:

  • Main Toolbars: Detailed Discussion of menus for Pico scopes and usage; Rulers and Updates for Pico
  • Automotive Menu: Guided Tests (Injectors, fuel Pumps, EGR and Ignition patterns (voltage and current waveforms)
  • Connect Detect: Proper connection of test probes - Serial Decoding, Triggering, AC vs DC Coupling
  • Advanced Engine Mechanical: In cylinder analysis review and - interpretation - Vacuum Waveforms, Exhaust Waveforms, Proper Synching of these waveforms

PicoScope Training III:  Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Chicagoland location TBD (Requires Completion of PicoScope Training I and II)

The third course in the series will apply an advanced. The peak of our training in this course will center around advanced techniques in scope diagnostics. There will be discussion manual setup, low amp probes, alarms and signals obscured by noise. There will be certificates issued from Pico Technology after completion of this course. This session will include an Advanced Step Forward:

  • Start Up Settings: Manual Setups, Noise Reduction, Aligning Reference Waveforms
  • Unique Low Amperage Probe Use: Parasitic Drains
  • Practical Testing - Course Required: Injector Voltage and Current, Cam and Crank, Fuel Pressure, EGR, Fuel Pump Current, Ignition Patterns, Various sensors
  • Review Engine Mechanical (If Time Allows): In cylinder analysis review and interpretation, In Cylinder Vacuum Waveforms. In Cylinder Exhaust Waveforms

PicoScope Training IV:  Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Chicagoland location TBD (Requires Completion of PicoScope Training I, II and III)

The final course in the 4-part series training program will continue at an advanced level. This course will define advanced techniques in engine mechanical analysis. The peak of our training in this course will center around the WPS500X Transducer. Technicians completing this series will receive certificates issued from Pico Technology and will be “power users” of the Pico equipment and accessories.

Advanced Techniques and the WPS500X

  • Making a Measurement: What is the WPS500X? What can the WPS500X do? A detailed discussion of the tool and its accessories
  • Advanced Engine Mechanical: In cylinder analysis review and interpretation, Vacuum Waveforms, Exhaust Waveforms, Proper Synching of these waveforms, Fuel Testing, Fuel Pressure
  • Functions of the tool: Zoom Function, Enhanced Analysis

Schedule for each day:

  • Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m., with coffee and pastries
  • The class will start promptly at 8:00 a.m.
  • A casual lunch will be served at noon
  • There will be a morning and afternoon beverage breaks
  • The class will end at 4:30 p.m.
