GF-6 Update - Part 2

GF-6 is the upcoming engine oil specification from ILSAC and will be divided into two sub-sections: GF-6A and GF-6B.  GF-6A is the upgrade from GF-5 and covers traditional ILSAC viscosity grades such as 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30, while GF-6B is the new category for ultra-low viscosity grades such as 0W-16 and 5W-16.  As of now, the first license date for ILSAC GF-6A is April 2018, while the license date for GF-6B is still under discussion.

With the introduction of GF-6, there are six new engine tests; four of these are replacement tests for current ones due to limited engine parts availability, while the other two are completely new engine tests.  The development of the replacement tests continues to progress with the exception of the sludge/varnish engine test due to a fuel issue.  The two new non-replacement tests are the Timing Chain Wear (TCW) test and the Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) test.  The LSPI engine test is a key factor of GF-6 and is important to OEMs because it solves a previously identified issue about certain chemical interactions between the lubricant, fuel, and engine.

With GF-6 on the horizon, Castrol will be starting the GF-6 engine test programs for our product lines.  Most of the engine tests are expected to be available for candidate testing in mid-2016.
